Historically Nuévalos was part of the Community of Calatayud, its territory being administered by the commanders of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Calatayud.
The town had a castle that the Castilians failed to take in those wars of the 14th century in which they seized a large part of the Aragonese border fortresses.
The main tower and the walled enclosure are integrated into the parish complex, confusing the religious and the military work.
